Maya Abdominal Massage

Rooted in traditional Mayan medicine, this external, non-invasive technique has been passed down by  generations of healers and midwives in Belize.  Known as "sobada," this massage focuses its attention on the abdomen, pelvis, womb, and lower back to help bring the body back into balance and promote overall health.

Although there are many benefits, I specialize in providing a  female focused care to provide support for:

"The uterus is the woman's core, if it is out of balance, her whole life is out of balance ; physically, emotionally, mentally"

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get started?
In order to maximize your treatment and cater to your specific needs, an initial 30 minute consult is required. I will send an intake form for you to fill out prior to your consultation, and we will go through your general and reproductive health history, menstrual cycle, concerns, and goals together. This is a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have, and for us to get to know each other! Following your consult, we will begin your first treatment session.
  • What does my initial session look like?
Your session will consist of a gentle, strategic massage that will focus on the abdomen, low back, hips, sacrum, and the uterus. You will also be taught how to perform self-care massage techniques at home to continue the healing process.
  • How does this technique work for woman?
The uterus is held in place by 10 ligaments. Ligaments, when stressed or strained, cause the uterus to become mal-positioned. If the uterus is mal-positioned, women experience a multitude of symptoms, including infertility, heavy or irregular menstrual cycles, and endometriosis. Guiding the uterus back to its optimal position in the pelvis helps to alleviate these symtpms, and prevents the progression of chronic disease
  • I've had a hysterectomy, can I still benefit from this massage?
Yes! Abdominal massage improves circulation around the area of the scar, drains lymph, and helps break up scar tissue and adhesions. Those who have had Cesarian births can also experience the same benefits. Abdominal massage can be applied 3 months after surgery
  • Are there any considerations to keep in mind?
Abdominal therapy is both safe and effective, but there are a few cautions and considerations to keep in mind. Some of these include: -No lower abdominal massage during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy -No abdominal massage can be administered if an IUD is present -Abdominal aneurysm is contraindicated for massage -Active abdominal/pelvic infections are contraindicated -No massage during active menstruation -Must wait 6 weeks after vaginal birth, or 3 months after a Cesarean birth for abdominal work -If undergoing chemotherapy, or if cancer is present, you MUST receive a letter of approval from your health care provider in order to receive bodywork
